Digital Life

The rapid development of new technologies is a key driver for the digitalization. Nowadays the digitalization is part of everyday life. Wearables, Smart Home, Connected Car and many other applications can be used by enterprises and private persons. This “digital” life implies manifold challenges, radical innovations and visionary projects. Hence, we are dedicated to research the topic Digital Life, the digitalization of human life in all areas of life.

A holistic approach is the only way to address the diverse issues that come along with the Digital Life. Therefore, we investigate different facets of Digital Life in interdisciplinary teams and combine methods from IS, economics, computer science and psychology. We concentrate on three major areas regarding research, application and education:

– How can information systems and information be designed to increase the benefits for individuals?

– How does the digitalization change the workplace of today and how should the tomorrow’s workplace look like?

– Which potentials come across with the digitalization of healthcare and how can they be used in a sustainable manner?

This results in three main fields of action for us: Individual Information Systems, Enterprise Information Systems, and E-Health. We use both, design and behavior-oriented research methods (e.g., development of software prototypes, case studies, experiments, surveys) to answer arising and relevant research questions. Our large network of and strong collaboration with companies and research institutes lays the foundation to conduct applied research analyzing interesting aspects from multiple perspectives and creating sustainable value for companies and private individuals.

E-Health: Recent concepts and technologies such as telemedicine, wearables, electronic patient files, big data, and networking of actors substantiate that there is significant technological advance in health care. This progress, which is typically referred to as eHealth, allows the development of new forms of care, improved communication, and increased digitization of the health care system. In general, eHealth unites all applications and measures that use modern information and communication technologies (ICT) in health care. These support, for example, the treatment and care of patients or the prevention of diseases by moving the patient into the spotlight. The aim here is to avoid overuse, underuse, and misuse, to achieve cost efficiency and to create transparency. Digital health management analyzes potential answers on the question of how health-conscious behavior can be further promoted from both, a consumer and business perspective. Especially, as employers must apply the Occupational Health and Safety Act and provide solutions for their employees. Therefore, Data Analytics as a methodological tool can enable the derivation of concrete and action-oriented recommendations from the broad mass of existing data. Ultimately, the networking of actors through digital health processes and systems allows the minimization of coordination, integration and networking problems and contributes to increasing quality and efficiency.

We address these issues within our cooperation network comprising various research partners from the fields of computer science, medicine, health economics, law, cultural and communication sciences as well as innovative companies and renowned research institutes (e.g. the Center for Interdisciplinary Health Research and the Digital Health/Medicine Platform of the Center for Digitization.Bavaria).

Individual Information Systems (IIS): A domestic Wi-Fi network no longer connects just a computer to the Internet. Today, there are a variety of new technologies as an addition to traditional devices such as smartphones, tablets, and notebooks. All these applications, such as wearables, smart home devices, and the connected car, are equipped with extensive sensors. These sensors provide a digital twin of our lives. The interaction of people using technologies can then be used to deduce a wide variety of factors (e.g., stress, fatigue).

In this research area, we aim to understand individuals and their behavior with information and information technology through concepts and methods of business informatics and design information systems accordingly.

Enterprise Information Systems (EIS): Information and communication technologies have long been used as enablers for new business processes and revolutionize the way we work. However, companies need to carefully look at the extent to which workplace technologies and systems support, influence, or perhaps even burden their employees. A brighter workplace, for example, creates more productive and healthier employees and is already required by the Occupational Health and Safety Act. With new IT solutions, however, the question of the benefits regularly arises anew. This applies, for example, to the question of how trends such as home office or the increasing, almost constant availability of employees affect their productivity and well-being.

The constant change in information systems and technologies makes it much more challenging to design a modern workplace, but it also offers enormous potential. This is why we focus on the analysis of acceptance and effects of new IT solutions and support companies in the sensible introduction of productivity-increasing solutions at the workplace.
